Presidential Manufacturing Initiative’s Regional Meeting
at Georgia Tech
The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) Working Group on Advanced Manufacturing held its first regional meeting at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta on Friday October 14, 2011.
The Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (AMP) is a national effort bringing together the Federal government, industry, universities, and other stakeholders to identify and invest in emerging technologies with the potential to create high-quality domestic manufacturing jobs and enhance the global competitiveness of the United States.
In the context of this meeting a MADE@GT (MAterials DEsign @ Georgia Tech) seminar was also held and consisted of technical talks around “Materials Genome Initiative” (MGI), which is a multi-year, multi-agency initiative designed to have a major impact in accelerating advanced material design and manufacture through modeling and simulation coupled with fabrication and characterization of the engineered materials. MGI promises to speed the discovery and commercialization of materials with novel properties; and expanded research and development efforts to enhance industrial energy efficiency. The pulp and paper industry was represented by IPST’s Associate Director of Research, Dr. Marko Hakovirta.
MGI is part of the overarching White House OSTP/PCAST “Advanced Manufacturing Partnership” (AMP). Georgia Tech President Bud Peterson is on the AMP Steering Committee.
