Lesson Plan: Portrait Watermarks
Objectives:
Students will study portrait watermarks of John F. Kennedy, Moses, and George Washington. They will
also learn about these men and the events that inspired the watermarks. Students will then create
a portrait of a classmate.

Materials:
- paper for sketching and for watercolors
- pencil
- erasers
- watercolors
- brushes
- cups of water

1. Learn:
Walk students through or allow them to explore the student web pages on portrait watermarks. If
students explore the pages independently, discuss what they saw while they were searching. You
may want to use some of the discussion questions on the pages.
2. Do:
Divide the class into pairs. Have students decide whether they want to do a profile portrait or one
with a straight view. Each student should make a few practice sketches of his/her model. Then he should
do a very light sketch of his model on watercolor paper. Complete the portrait with watercolors.
3. Evaluate:
Have a class critique of the portraits. See if they can all be matched to their model.
